The Healing Benefits of an Outdoor Fountain

Outdoor fountains are water-driven features often used for decor. However, did you know that they offer more than just adding cosmetic value to a property. Many researches have revealed that these installations can be a source for a person's inner healing. We're talking about its soothing effect from stress, anxiety and tension. If you're looking to purchase an outdoor fountain for your home or commercial area; you're making the right choice! Here are some ways an outdoor fountain can relieve you from stress and ultimately, making you feel better, stronger and healthier.

Make way for positivity

There's a scientific explanation why taking a shower rejuvenates your mind and body. Other the feeling of cleansing, the sensation of water cools you down and washes away the tensed ions from your body. This results to a feeling of calm after a bath. The same reaction is similar to walking nearby rivers, streams and lakes. Water has a profound healing effect; the sight of the calm tides, the ripples it makes, and the bright blue green hue reflecting under the sky lures us back to concentration, immediately removing our notions of stress and worry. This is the reason why many people choose to be at the lake or by the sea whenever they want to rest.

But going out of our way to head towards our favorite water park can be a hassle. This is why having an outdoor fountain can be the next best thing in inviting positivity. The therapeutic benefit of fountains is backed by experts that hospitals and medical facilities even use this to help their patients recover faster.

Healing is from the inside out

Back in 1995, a nonprofit organization called Center for Health Design has asked a group of landscape designers and architects to observe how properly landscaped hospital gardens can be a factor for recovery. Researchers have interviewed two thousand users and have concluded a pattern among the patients. It has been revealed that patients visit hospital gardens for hours, seeking relaxation from both physical and mental fatigue. Among the best factors: the soothing sounds and sights from the water splashing from the garden outdoor fountains, intermixed with the panorama of full-blown trees and flowering plants. The healing power of nature has become one of the best forces behind a patient's recovery.

Serenity is key to recovery

Experts attest that patients who have view of beautiful, natural landscapes are the ones who recover faster. They are mentally and emotionally fit, struggles less with medication and therapy, and has a more positive outlook. Water features such as an outdoor fountain offer exciting means to enjoy this small piece of nature-inspired environment. Patients, especially the young ones, can lounge around the area, play with the water and use their imagination to trigger a sense of inner joy.

Outdoor fountains are investments that offer great rewards. Use these water features to welcome a spirit of calm and positivity in your home. A few minutes outdoors, reading your favorite book while listening to the sound of the splashing water, can help you detoxify from many of this life’s tensions and bring back the focus you need.

A Burst of Good Fortune: Singapore's Fountain of Wealth

The Fountain of Wealth is one of the many spectacles found in the heart of the largest shopping area in Singapore, Suntec City. In 1998, the Guinness Book of Records has listed it as the largest fountain in the world, occupying more than 1,600 square meters and standing tall at the height of 13.8 meters. The entire sculpture is wrought from silicon bronze, inspired from the shapes of a Hindu Mandala. The ring, along with its leaning stems, are a symbolic representation of unity, equality and harmony. It speaks of the Singapore culture as a great brew of races and religions, as this small yet powerful country is home to people of many origins.

Created by the Melbourne, Australia based firm DCG Design, this metallic sculpture was erected in 1995 and has become one of Singapore's best tourist destinations. The ring spans about 66 meters in circumference and weighs more than 80 tons. It is also a glory to behold at ground level. The Fountain of Wealth is strategically placed in the core of Suntec City, where five high rise buildings are easily within view. These towers, somehow, represent the fingers of a left hand, somewhat emerging from the ground. Looking skywards, the scene looks like an illustrated palm of a hand.

At daytime, this outdoor fountain offers a tranquil spot in the middle of the busy, flourishing hub. The ring spouts thin lines of waters, while at the very center, liquid is shot up to 13 meters. Suntec City shoppers and workers lounge about it, enjoying the view. However, this fountain is more lovely to behold at night time; its base is filled with LED lights that glow during the evening, illuminating the area with a spectrum of colors. The bronze sculpture gives way to the purple and blue hues of the water, and onlookers discover many ways of enjoying the scene. Dancing laser lights, coupled with laser messages, charm the crowd with surprise.

With strong Feng Shui belief, the Fountain of Wealth is said to bless people with power, success and prosperity. Since its conception, Singaporeans have performed a simple ritual which will invite success into their lives. Many times a day, the fountain will be switched off. During this moment, a person must approach the smaller part of the fountain and make their wish. It is a requirement that they sink their right hand in it, and then walk around the fountain three times while murmuring their prayers over and over again. This ritual, the locals believe, will help make the wish come true. However, there is one requirement: the fountain must only be approached with good intentions.

More than just a contemporary sculpture, Singapore’s Fountain of Wealth strongly reflects the country’s desire for progress and prosperity. Alongside it is their vision of harmony; of keeping each culture, religion and race united despite the many differences, to achieve a common goal. This spectacular landmark is a must-see for every tourist, as it denotes the country’s sense of pride and beliefs, created with strong design aesthetics and deep spiritual insight.

The Magnificent Trevi Fountain of Italy

Fontana di Trevi, or Trevi Fountain, is a magnificent outdoor fountain lodged in the Trevi district of Rome. With its distinct Renaissance charm set against the meticulously sculptured backdrop, there's no wonder that this fountain has become one of the best tourist spots in the area. It stands more than 26 meters in height and spans less than 50 meters in width. The Trevi Fountain has been featured as a muse in art, film and literature, appearing in many classics due to its unfading beauty and thrilling history.

Two Italian geniuses wrought the fountain. Architect Nicola Salvi designed the grand monument, which was then completed by the Baroque sculptor Pietry Bracci, whose other works included the tomb for Benedict XIII and Benedict XIV. The fountain was commissioned by Pope Clement XII, who organized a contest for the best design. Nicola Salvi took home the crown in place of Alessandro Galilei—whose design was considered as the crowd's favorite.

In 1732, work began and it took 30 years for the fountain to be completed. Salvi died without seeing his work, but he did successfully remove a slight blemish: a barber’s sign, behind one of the sculpted vases. This vase was then called Asso di Coppe, or the ace of cups. Giuseppe Panini took Salve’s place in completing the task, and in 1762, the fountain was officially inaugurated by none other than Pope Clemens XIII. Since then, the Trevi Fountain has become one of the most outstanding landmarks in Rome.

Salve's winning design involved a story, victoriously translated in detailed stonework. The central figure is the god Oceanus, assisted by two Tritons. One successfully manages to tame a sea horse, while the other struggles to master his animal. This symbolizes the two extreme moods of the sea: a calm, quiet surface in contrast to the strong, roaring tides. Looking entirely like a marbled stage set, one of the reliefs picture out a young virgin girl, pointing to the spring where the water flows. This is to symbolize Aqua Virgo, an aqueduct built in 19 BC. Other figures are actually allegorical symbols, making this fountain rich in narrative just as in art.

Time wears out every tangible material, and the Trevi Fountain was not built to last forever. The fountain has undergone its first refurbishing in 1998, where artists paid detail to the cracks and deterioration this magnificent structure has undergone. Following up, Italian brand Fendi has laid out a thorough, 20-month restoration project for the landmark in 2013, sponsoring more than 2 million Euros for the said task. The work started in June 2014 and ended in November 2015, where an official ceremony signaled the reopening of this glorious monument. Among its modern installations are a hundred LED lights that glows like night time stars, offering better illumination of the fountain.

Today, crowds of thousands visit Rome for the Trevi fountain, tossing coins and making wishes, hoping it will come true. However, this ritual is done with a bit of a flair; one must throw their coin with their back facing the fountain, and their right hand over their left shoulder. One amazing fact about the Trevi Fountain: an estimated 3,000 Euros are thrown in the fountain each day! People are forbidden to steal coins from the fountain; other than it is bad lack, they are also robbing an amount to be used to help Rome’s needy.

The Bellagio Fountains – Grandeur at Its Finest

The Bellagio Fountains – Grandeur at Its Finest

The Bellagio Fountains of Las Vegas are arguably the most famous fountains in the United States. These world-renowned fountains are located on a vast, manmade lake in front of the Las Vegas Bellagio Hotel. Popular performances take place each night in front of the Bellagio, and they can be viewed from many different points along the Las Vegas Strip. In the afternoons, the shows take place at 30 minute intervals and at 15 minute intervals from 8 pm until 12 am. Two minutes prior to a show, the lights that illuminate the Bellagio Hotel will change to red, white, and blue or purple – depending on the particular music that’s playing. It’s not uncommon for additional shows to play for special occasions, like weddings.

What makes the performances of the Bellagio Fountains so special is how intricately they are choreographed, and the shows are choreographed to a wide variety of different music. Some of the more well-known pieces of music used in the shows include “My Heart Will Go On”, “God Bless the USA”, and “Viva Las Vegas”.

The lake where the fountains reside measures approximately 8 acres in size. The water in the lake is provided by a fresh water well that was dug decades ago for the purpose of irrigating a golf course that used to be on the property where the hotel is now built. The lake and the fountains use far less water than irrigating the golf course did. The fountains are powered by a system of pipes and more than 1,200 nozzles, which are what make it possible for the fountain displays to be put on in conjunction with more than 4,000 lights. During construction, the fountain cost slightly more than $40 million to build, and it was designed and built by WET. WET is a design firm that specializes in the creation and construction of architectural water features and innovative fountains.

The Bellagio Fountains employ four specific types of nozzles to create the different effects seen during a show:

  • Extreme Shooters – There are 16 Extreme Shooters, which are capable of sending jets of water over 450 feet in the air.
  • Super Shooters – The Fountains feature 192 Super Shooters, which can blast water as high as 260 feet in the air.
  • Shooters – The Shooters send water upwards in jets, which reach varying heights. The Fountains boast 798 Shooters in total.
  • Oarsmen – These nozzles are so called because they have a wide range of spherical motions. There are 208 Oarsmen altogether.

The Bellagio Fountains are a work of art in and of themselves, but the complex and intricate designs created to build this masterpiece are truly astonishing. Their design is often emulated by other design firms, but it can never be truly replicated.

If you ever happen to visit Las Vegas, you are strongly encouraged to check out one of the Bellagio Fountains’ water shows.

The Swarovski Fountain: Ahead of the Rest

If you’ve never heard of Swarovski then you’ve probably been living under a rock. Everyone in the new world knows or has seen the gorgeous crystals that the company is well known for. Swarovski specializes in luxury glass products, high end cut crystals, and intricate jewelry design. Their intimate retail stores can be found in just about every mall in North America, with the main headquarters located in Austria. The company was founded by Daniel Swarovski in 1895, after he decided to make crystals more easily accessible to people around the world. He harnessed their beauty and skillfully created masterpieces of art, jewelry, and décor. His work can be seen in the form of rings, earrings, necklaces, ornaments, loose crystals and even…a fountain. That’s right, you read that correctly, a fountain.

The Swarovski Fountain is located in the town of Wattens, Austria, just outside of Innsbruck. It operates as part of the Crystal World theme park that is also run by the Swarovski company. From the outside, the massive fountain appears to be a giant head, one reminiscent of the totem heads of Easter Island but in a rounder fashion. It was constructed in such a way that it’s become part of the surrounding landscape, actually blending into the grassy hill in which it protrudes from. The two eyes, made of Swarovski glass, shine brightly in the sunlight and the large mouth lays open to let an out pour of water fountain down into the park’s pond below.

The outside, a stunning display of ingenuity and creative undertaking, is nothing compared to what’s inside. The fountain itself is actually the home of a very unique museum of sorts. Inside, visitors of the theme park can view numerous exhibitions created using the very crystals the Swarovski company is well known for. If that’s not interesting enough for you then consider this; the moss covered head and the fountain which pours from its mouth are situated at the entrance of the exhibit. To keep the allure of the attraction natural in appearance, moss hangs heavily from the head and the hills it sits on to overhang the entire entrance along the bottom. Victors can line up outside and admire the one-of-a-kind fountain display while waiting to enter the near hidden entrance to the crystal museum.

We all can’t have spectacular outdoor fountains such as the Swarovski Fountain, but we can display some impressive pieces around the exterior of our homes and/or offices. Outdoor fountains lend a certain tranquil beauty to the space it occupies and gives visitors a sense of calming peace. Check out some fabulous and more realistic outdoor fountains here.
